ferret feeding guide
Before deciding what feed to give your ferret, we must first determine whether or not the ferret came from the rodent family. The answer is no.
Ferrets are from the mustelids family. They hail from the same family as weasels, badgers and minks. Rodents have rabbits and rats classified under it. It is through this classification that we can truly determine which diets suits a ferret best.
As mentioned earlier, ferrets are not rodents. Rodents are herbivorous, mustelids are not. Rodents thrive mainly on vegetables. Mustlids need a little more that as their metabolisms need meat to function.

Any ferret feeding guide will suggest fresh meat. Pork, beef or chicken may be fed to your ferret. Muttons may also be fed but not often as it has a higher fat content. Whichever meat you choose to feed your ferret, make sure that it is fresh and clean. Raw meat is a good medium for bacteria. It might cause a disease once fed.
If you find raw meat expensive and impractical, you may feed your ferret commercial ferret food. Of course, you have to be careful when buying commercial ferret food. Make sure that it does not contain any harmful chemical or ingredients. It’s best that you read the labels and see the nutritional information. If you’re unsure on whether or not the commercial ferret food sustains your ferret’s needs, you may choose to provide additional supplements.
Clean water must come with your ferret’s feed. Like almost all human beings, ferrets need water to survive.
